Illegal Gambling Machine Seizure Update
Pueblo, CO― The Pueblo Police Department noted an increase in crime and a decrease in quality of life in areas of the City of Pueblo due to several illegal gambling establishments. As a result, Pueblo Police brought these issues to the attention of Mayor Heather Graham who drafted an ordinance making the operation of these illegal establishments a municipal violation that could be charged in Municipal Court. This ordinance was passed by Pueblo City Council on May 14, 2024, and subsequently signed into law by Mayor Graham.
As a result of the passage of the new ordinances, on July 15, 2024, the Pueblo Police Department’s Special Investigation Division executed 5 search warrants on local businesses involved in illegal gambling within the City of Pueblo:
- 320 West Northern Avenue
- 1103 North Elizabeth Street
- 1722 South Prairie Avenue
- 303 East Northern Avenue
In total, approximately $20,000 dollars was seized as evidence along with 62 gambling machines. Many of the machines seized replicate those commonly used in towns where gambling is legalized in Colorado, which are Cripple Creek, Black Hawk, and Central City.
During the operation, 11 people were cited under the new city ordinance for the following:
- 11-1-902(a) Engaging In Gambling
- 11-1-902(b) Possession of A Gambling Device
- 11-1-902(c) Gambling Premise
- 11-1-903(a) Electronic Gambling
Between July 2024 and January 2025, all involved parties were either found guilty or plead guilty to illegal gambling, closing out all legal proceedings for the current cases. All machines were deemed illegal to possess and subsequently scheduled to be destroyed. Investigations into other illegal gambling establishments are ongoing.
The information contained in this press release is based on preliminary information available at the time of its drafting.
