The Pueblo Police Department has been taking reports from residents about phone calls where the caller is claiming to be a representative of Social Security.
Individuals report that a male, with a foreign accent, states he is with Social Security and needs to verify information in order for the potential victim to continue receiving their benefits. Initially, the caller asks for an address which is usually verified. Then, the male caller asks the potential victim to verify their bank account information. When that information is refused, the caller becomes aggressive and states the potential victim “must” provide the account information or they will not receive their benefits.
These suspects are trying to take advantage of the recent government shutdown and possible delay in benefit payouts.
The Pueblo Police Department would like to remind you to please be weary of anyone calling you and asking for any of your information. If you feel something is not right, it usually isn't.
