ShotSpotter and Real Time Crime Center Assistance Leads to Arrest and Conviction
Pueblo, CO– On July 28 at 7:39 a.m., the Pueblo Police Department’s ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection system, alerted of a weapon being discharged near Dollar General, located at 818 E. 4th Street on the City’s east side.
A male suspect was initially unknown; however, he returned to the store later in the day and was recognized by an employee who called police. The police department’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) was able to locate the suspect on camera as he began to leave the scene. While monitoring live video from the police station, RTCC technicians relayed the suspect’s location to responding officers who quickly detained the suspect, later identified as Matthew Arnette. At the time of his arrest, Arnette had a loaded and chambered .380 handgun in his possession. In addition, two spent shell casings were found on-scene.
Last Friday, September 20, 2024, less than two months after the crime occurred, Arnette plead guilty and was sentenced to eight months in jail for Prohibited Use of a Weapon.
“The use of the ShotSpotter technology and the swift work of the Real Time Crime Center technicians helped ensure officers on the ground were able to quickly locate and apprehend the suspect as well as provided strong evidence to assist in the investigation of the incident,” stated Real Time Crime Center Sergeant Jeremy Mathews.

ShotSpotter is a gunshot detection system that detects when a gunshot is fired. It uses sound wave detection technology to triangulate the location of gunshots within a defined area and send an alert to officers. The system supports the Pueblo Police Department’s efforts to more effectively respond to and investigate gunfire incidents by leveraging real-time gunfire intelligence to reduce gun violence and build community trust.
Real Time Crime Center (RTCC)
Launched in July 2024, the Real Time Crime Center amplifies the work of officers on the ground by providing additional information to aid in improving response times, locating suspects, and persons in need of emergency assistance. The center includes technology like ShotSpotter, officer-worn body footage, drone footage when deployed by the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), camera footage, license plate readers, and more. Through a network of cameras located in strategic areas throughout the City of Pueblo, the technology allows non-sworn personnel to assist police officers in real-time while on calls.
