From time to time we will spotlight some of the current projects for the Pueblo Department Public Works.
Mel Harmon Bridge Repair
The City of Pueblo will begin bridge rehabilitation on Mel Harmon Bridge on Monday, Nov. 3. The Mel Harmon Bridge will be closed for the remainder of the project until completion on Monday, April 6, 2026.
All businesses in the area will remain open and can be accessed via the frontage road off of W. 29th Street. Detour routes will be clearly marked and available for alternate access.
“The Mel Harmon Bridge rehabilitation project requires a closure but there is still access available to the businesses located along the frontage road. There will be no utilization of the structure until the upgrades are complete in early April,” said Director of Public Works Andrew Hayes. “We appreciate the public’s patience with the project and encourage everyone to plan for extra travel time as safety is the utmost priority,” Hayes continued.
The rehabilitation project includes resurfacing, structural repairs and safety upgrades. This project is being funded through the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) through grants, which required a 20 percent match from the City of Pueblo. CDOT awarded a total of $1,215,880 and the City of Pueblo was required to contribute $303,970 for the contributing match.
In 2018, the City was awarded a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the amount of $418,701 to aid in the rehabilitation of this bridge. The source of the funds that were budgeted and appropriated in the 2018 and 2019 City of Pueblo annual budget is the FASTER Bill portion of the City’s Highway User Tax Fund (HUTF). In late 2024, the City was awarded supplemental funds, in the amount of $797,179 from the Off-System Bridge Program due to the engineers’ estimate exceeding the amount of funding available.
