The Bicycle Patrol Unit, led by Sgt. Stephen Jesik, was established to provide increased mobility to patrol officers and increase opportunities for contact with members of our community. The unit has approximately 20 police officers trained and certified in police bicycle operations.
The use of a bicycle on patrol facilitates a more effective patrol of business districts and residential areas; allows for greater contact with those we serve; and assists in the community relations role of our officers.
Our bike officers have repeatedly demonstrated their value as a rapid response resource at parades, concerts, and numerous other special events. The community gains many of the advantages of a "beat officer" without the loss of mobility that dedicating an officer to foot patrol causes, and the officers can interact with and learn from the community.
