Two brothers arrested for kidnapping, sexual assault, and other charges after SWAT standoff.
On Friday, September 22, 2023, the Pueblo Police Department received information that two teen juveniles had been held inside a home against their will the previous evening but eventually escaped and called the police. Officers spoke with both juveniles and learned they had been at a home in the 1200 block of Taylor Avenue, and while there, 20-year-old Elyjah Cancino and 31-year-old Ernest Cancino-Vigil would not let them leave. One of the teen juveniles escaped the following day and called the police. Police learned that after the teen juvenile escaped, Cancino forced the other teen juvenile to accompany him to look for the escaped teen. During the search, the teen who was with Cancino was also able to escape. Police were told another person inside the house reported being sexually assaulted by Cancino-Vigil when Cancino and the teen had left.
Police responded to the house in the 1200 block of Taylor Avenue, and several people came out of the home, including Cancino, who was taken into custody without incident. One of the people who came out of the house went inside before the police could stop them. Cancino-Vigil refused to come out of the house, as did others inside. The Pueblo Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Teams were activated and responded. Eventually, Cancino-Vigil exited the house and was taken into custody without incident. The other adults eventually came out of the home as well. Cancino and Cancino-Vigil were both booked into the Pueblo County Judicial Center for numerous felony and misdemeanor charges.
