City of Pueblo Calls for Artists for Pueblo Levee Mural Project Design with Five Flags Theme

St. Mary Corwin Historic Levee Mural by Shannon Palmer

PUEBLO—The City of Pueblo is requesting submissions from local artists for a historical and artistic design to be displayed as part of the Pueblo Levee Mural Project. The winning artist will receive a $1,000 stipend and the City of Pueblo will cover the cost up to $4,000 of the mural painting project with supplies and production.

“The City of Pueblo is excited to announce a contest for a mural on the Pueblo Levee with the theme of the five flags,” said District 3 Pueblo City Councilor Sarah Martinez. “This theme represents our history and culture of Pueblo while allowing our talented art community the opportunity to showcase their designs in a lasting and historic way on the Pueblo Levee. I’m looking forward to allowing our fellow Puebloans the opportunity to vote on the final design to be painted on the levee.”

The theme for the submission shall include the five flags which is part of the City Seal with representation of the five territories or countries that held dominion over Pueblo in the last two centuries. The five flags include France, Mexico, Texas, Spain and of course the United States of America. The designs should tell a visual story of the history of Pueblo and represent the community of the city without recreating the official City Seal.

Submissions for entry into the mural design contest are due by Friday, Nov. 18. The horizontal format is 24 ft. high by 48-60 ft. wide for painted scale on the levee. All submissions will be evaluated by the Art Review Committee. No logos, religious depictions or trademarked designs shall be included in the design. All artwork must be original to the artist submitting the mural design.

The top five designs will be selected by Pueblo City Council. The final selection will go through a community-wide contest that will take place via the City of Pueblo website and social media channels. An announcement of the top five designs will be announced in early December and the contest will be open online for Pueblo residents to cast their vote for the overall winner.

Please submit your proposed artwork to Designs will be accepted in .jpg or .png format to be accepted by the Art Review Committee before review by Pueblo City Council.
