City of Pueblo and Pueblo Sister Cities Commission to Recognize 30th Anniversary of Independence of Slovenia
PUEBLO – The City of Pueblo and the Pueblo Sister Cities Commission will recognize the 30th anniversary of the United States’ recognition of the independence of the Republic of Slovenia. The public is invited to a special flag raising ceremony on Thursday, April 7 at 10 a.m. at Sister Cities’ Plaza on Union Ave. to commemorate the occasion.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate Slovenia’s freedom and to bring our melting pot community here in Pueblo together,” said Mayor of Pueblo Nick Gradisar. “We recognize here in America how important our freedom is to us and I’m looking forward to this occasion to support our Sister City of Maribor, Slovenia in their celebration of independence.”
On April 7, 1992, the U.S. officially recognized the independence of the Republic of Slovenia after successfully succeeding from the former Yugoslavia after a short war. Maribor, Slovenia is one of Pueblo’s six sister cities recognized by the Pueblo Sister Cities Commission. A Sister City is officially a broad-based approved long-term partnership between two communities in two different countries.
The treasurer for Pueblo Sister Cities Commission Fritz Anzlovar has visited Slovenia four times and even hosted many individuals during their trips here to Pueblo. Anzlovar shared, “I still have family in Slovenia and have had many trips to visit the beautiful country, even one in 2019 with Mayor Gradisar.” Anzlovar went on to share that the history of Slovenia remains important to him and to the members of the Sister Cities Commission so this flag raising ceremony is special.
The Pueblo Sister Cities Commission is a jointly appointed board from the City and County of Pueblo. The mission of the Pueblo Sister City Commission is to enrich partnerships and provide educational, cultural and business opportunities for all citizens of Pueblo and its Sister Cities. The six sister cities partnered with Pueblo include Bergamo, Italy; Chihuahua, Mexico; Lucca Sicula, Sicily; Maribor, Slovenia; Puebla, Mexico and Weifang, China.
