At approx. 1214 on 093017, Tyler Owens (110892) and his girlfriend, were traveling from Texas, and had just checked into a room at the Clarion Motel, 4001 N. Elizabeth Ave. As Owens opened the trunk of his car to begin unloading his belongings, he observed a male approach him. Owens believed this male was about to ask for money, when suddenly the male dove into the opened trunk and closed the lid. This male, who was later identified as Daxx Durbin-Rumsey (080489) then began kicking the interior of the trunk in an effort to smash down the seat backs of the rear seats.

Tyler Owens opened the trunk again and demanded that Durbin-Rumsey get out, which he did and the two men began fighting. Durbin-Rumsey then ran southbound from the parking lot, to the Valero Convenience store, with Owens and the manager of the Clarion following him. Durbin-Rumsey continued running across W. US Hwy 50, and through the K-Mart parking lot, where he ran up to a Colorado Dept. of Corrections SUV and tried to get into the driver's seat. Harry Campbell (120649) had just parked the SUV and was standing near the opened driver's door.

Without saying anything, Durbin-Rumsey approached Campbell and tried to take the State vehicle, and a scuffle ensued. Durbin-Rumsey escaped and ran up to a van that was being driven through the parking lot by an unidentified woman. Durbin-Rumsey also attempted to get into the front passenger seat, of this van, but was not successful. Durbin-Rumsey then ran towards the Taco Bell restaurant with Tyler Owens and other witnesses still chasing after him.

Daxx Durbin-Rumsey ran up to another car that had just been parked in the lot in front of Daniella's Planeteria (ice cream shop) 3305 N. Elizabeth St. Ramiro Castillo (092072) had observed Durbin-Rumsey trying to start his car. They also began fighting as Tyler Owens and other witnesses converged on that location. Durbin-Rumsey ran away towards the Octopus Car Wash, and then across N. Elizabeth St. Off-duty PPD Officer, M. Pedraza, was at a nearby restaurant and saw the incident and intercepted Durbin-Rumsey in the parking lot of 3130 N. Elizabeth St. Responding officers arrived and took Durbin-Rumsey into custody. A large folding knife was located on his person.

Daxx Durbin-Rumsey appeared to be under the influence of an unknown narcotic stimulant and was booked into the Pueblo County Justice Center on Attempted Motor Vehicle Theft, Criminal Trespass and Assault. It is unknown if Daxx Durbin-Rumsey is responsible for other recent "car jackings". The investigation is ongoing.
