The Pueblo Police Department consists of 266 authorized positions, 207
of those positions being sworn or officer positions and 59 being
civilian positions. The department operates on an annual budget of
$25,953,712 (2011 approved budget). Of the budget, $24,269,452 (or
93.51%) is dedicated to personnel costs including salaries and benefits
and $1,684,260 (or 6.48%) is dedicated to daily operating needs such as
fuel for the cars, utility costs, equipment leases, and other similar
items.
Administrative Offices
On February 16, 2011, after the retirement of Chief James W. Billings,
Chief Luis Velez took the reins of the Pueblo Police Department as the
interim Chief of Police. He has a vast amount of experience and led the
Colorado Springs Police Department as their chief of police for over
four years. The City of Pueblo was pleased to announce the appointment
of Luis Velez
as Chief of Police effective July 1, 2011. Velez has demonstrated
outstanding leadership while serving as Interim Chief of Police since
his appointment to that post.
Also located within the chief’s office is Deputy Chief Michael Bennett, who oversees the
Services Bureau and includes the administrative side of the Police Department.
