Recreational Fires
Fires within the City Limits
(per 2009 International Fire Code 302.1)

****Pueblo must NOT be under 'High Fire Danger' status****

Recreational Fires
in the city limits only if ALL the following can be met:

  • Most importantly, fire must have a 25-foot minimum clearance from all combustibles. This includes fences, trees, vehicles,and structures
  • Shall be contained in a fire pit or ring (this does not include 55 gallon barrels due to size limitations)
  • Fire (flame) size must not exceed 3 feet in diameter, and 2 feet in height
  • Fuel must not be refuse, i.e. no leaves, yard waste, trash,or other material that would otherwise be discarded
  • Fire must be constantly attended
  • Extinguishment methods immediately at hand: garden hose line fully charged or extinguisher (5# min. size, ABC class), and shovel or like tool
  • Fire must be fully extinguished at conclusion of each event
  • Be known that if a citizen makes a health, smoke, or odor complaint as a result of this fire, it must be extinguished

***It is typically not easy to meet all the above conditions, particularly the 25-foot radius

Portable Outdoor Fireplaces
Portable outdoor fireplaces: (open hearth or with chimney, non-combustible construction; similar to those sold at local home improvement stores): Small fire as per manufacturer’s instructions with wire-mesh spark shield in place. Same requirements as above, but shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material

  • Exception: Fireplaces used at one- and two-family dwellings

Shall be conducted only with approval and issuance of a permit by the Fire Prevention Bureau, with very specific restrictions

Open Burning
Open burning (not in a container of any type) is only permitted on agriculturally (A) zoned land, requires issuance of a permit from the Fire Prevention Bureau, and has very specific restrictions.

BBQ Grills
Prohibited on un-sprinklered combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible materials in multi-family (3+) dwellings

Exception: Small BBQ with no greater than 2 ½ pound LP cylinder is allowed

  • Failure to comply will result in Fire Department extinguishment and a municipal citation with penalties
