INSIDE THE PUEBLO
FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Pueblo Fire
Department is comprised of the following:
|
FIRE AND EMERGENCY
OPERATIONS From the City's
ten Fire Stations, operational personnel respond to over 14,000 emergency calls per year,
utilizing nine Advanced Life Support (ALS) engines, one Basic
Life Support (BLS) engine, a Truck/Ladder Company, Heavy Rescue Squad,
and Airport Crash Unit.
The Pueblo Fire Department provides services to mitigate
the effects of a variety of emergency situations, including fires, medical
emergencies, physical entrapments, and releases of hazardous materials.
The provision of these services is the responsibility of our fire
suppression personnel.
Resources within the Emergency
Services Division include 129 uniformed men and women, who deliver
services from the strategic location of 10 fire
stations, staffed 24-hours per day. Fire companies are normally staffed
with a Captain, Engineer, Emergency Medical Officer or Firefighter.
Fire suppression personnel conduct fire inspections
throughout the year. In addition to emergency work, these members provide
a wide range of services to the community, including blood-pressure
screening, tours of fire stations and apparatus, and fire and life safety
presentations within the community.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
The
mission of EMS through the Pueblo Fire Department is to provide a rapid,
safe response to all 911 medical emergencies within the community,
ensuring competent patient care of the highest quality possible is
accomplished in the pre hospital setting.
Approximately 70 % percent of these incidents consist of calls related
to emergency medical service requests. All fire companies are equipped to
deliver emergency medical care. Firefighters are trained to the minimum
level of Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) and Emergency Medical
Officers have obtained licenses at the Emergency Medical
Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I) level. |
|
SPECIAL OPERATIONS
The Pueblo
Fire Department has kept pace with the ever-increasing challenges that
face a modern day fire service through its own Special Operations Members.
This team of highly trained firefighters responds to calls that the average
trained firefighter is unable to handle. These members are specially
trained in the disciplines of Hazardous Materials, Rope/High Angle Rescue,
Swift Water Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, and Trench Rescue. They also
respond regionally under countywide mutual aide agreements to successfully
handle emergencies requiring their special talents. |
|
TRAINING
The Training
Division develops programs designed to
maintain and upgrade the skills of Fire personnel. The Training Division also
provides medical training to the firefighters and Emergency Medical Officer's,
assuring they keep abreast of the latest skills and
education required for continuing certification. Through its comprehensive programs, the
Training Division provides over 31,000 hours of training
per year to each of our members. |
|
FIRE PREVENTION The Fire Prevention Division is an
integral part of the Pueblo Fire Department. Their role is to conduct fire
safety inspections on all commercial properties in the city and provide
both plan review and compliance inspections for all new buildings
constructed within the community. Public education is also a major concern
of the Department’s Fire
Life Safety and Operations personnel. Each October during Fire Prevention
Week, Pueblo Fire reaches out to thousands of local children to provide
fire safety messages. This program helps protect our community’s
youngsters by teaching them what to do in the event of an emergency.
Annually, we make contact with over 14,000 residents.
The Bureau also conducts investigations into
the fires that occur within the City. Determining the origin and cause
of a fire plays a prime role in preventing future incidents.
Bureau Fire Investigator personnel remain "on-call" 24 hours a day to respond
to fire incidents. |
|
ADMINISTRATION The goal of the Division is to assure
that the men and women of the Department have the leadership, training,
and materials necessary to provide the citizens of Pueblo the best
possible fire protection and emergency medical services
Under the direction of the
Fire Chief, the Administrative Division supports the Department’s primary
mission of protecting life and property. This includes planning and
