The North Side
Intensive-Level Historic Building
Survey is Complete!
In 2005, the
HPC was successful in receiving a State Historic Fund grant, matched with
Community Development Block Grant dollars, to intensively study the eligibility
of the North Side neighborhood for designation as historic districts. The
study area was generally from I25 to Craig St., and from 10th St. on the south
to about 29th St. on the north. Because of funding constraints, the first
phase of the study included the area between Santa Fe and Craig (west side), and
between 10th Street and 19th Street. The services
of Historitecture, Inc. (Adam Thomas, Architectural Historian),
were retained to conduct the first phase of the study. The study was
completed in May, 2007.
The
intensive-level survey resulted in an inventory of 347 properties. 24
were field-determined as eligible for listing in the National Register of
Historic Places, and 43 were found eligible for the Pueblo Register of Cultural
Resources. 275 properties could potentially contribute to an historic
district.
The study provided five recommendations for the City of
Pueblo:
-
Designate Historic Districts
-
Conduct Further Intensive-Level Surveys
-
Develop a City-wide Historical and Architectural
Context Study
-
Foster Better Cooperation Between the neighborhood
and Parkview Medical Center on historic
preservation issues
-
Work with North Side Property Owners to Instill Respect
for and Pride in their Historic Houses

The study
area was found to encompass two distinctive neighborhoods. The southern
neighborhood extends southward from West 15th Street. The houses in this
particular area are on average older (ca. 1870-1910) and smaller than those in
the northern portion of the survey area, and they are oriented toward the
east-west streets. The northern neighborhood extends from 15th St. to
19th St. The period of significance is ca. 1890-1950, and the houses are
oriented to the north-south streets. The study recommended the designation
of two separate historic districts to embody the significance of these two
neighborhoods, the Thatcher Historic District to the south, and the 18th Street
District to the north. Download a map showing the boundaries of the recommended historic districts

Funding for
the second phase of the study from the CHS Certified Local Government grant
program has been confirmed, and it is anticipated that Phase II of the
study will be undertaken during summer 2007, from 19th to 20th streets and
from the east side of Main St. to the west side of West St.
| No action has been taken on the
recommendations of the study, and none is scheduled. Only City
Council designates historic landmarks or historic districts. Monitor
this website for possible upcoming meetings. The findings of the
study are posted to provide community information and education, and to
stimulate community discussion concerning the northside's historic
resources. |
